Summer Training FAQs

What is the Instructional Design Summer Training Program?

The Instructional Design Summer Training Program (STP) is designed to connect TCNJ faculty with the resources and support they need to integrate digital tools for teaching and learning. The Summer Training Program will offer three learning pathways (beginner, intermediate, advanced) to meet the needs of a range of learners. The main components of the Summer Training Program include:

  • Self-paced tutorials and online classes.
  • Scheduled live workshops throughout the summer.
  • Learning Communities.
  • A curated Best Practices Repository.
  • Real-time coaching from the Instructional Design team.
  • Sample course tours.
  • Templates that you can import to your own Canvas courses.

How do I know if I should do the beginner, intermediate, or advanced training pathway?

Beginner—Aside from this past spring, you’re new to teaching online and want to start with the basics. For example, creating assignments and collecting student work in Canvas, posting and organizing resources for student use, sharing screens and using breakout rooms in Zoom.

Intermediate—You are comfortable using Canvas in a variety of ways, but you want additional support with designing for an online, hybrid or hyflex environment.

Advanced—You have experience with online teaching prior to spring 2020, but want to explore best practices and connect with other faculty members who often teach online.

Will I be paid for this training?

The College is currently negotiating an MOA with the TCNJ-AFT. Those who have not yet been paid for training, via the full BL/OL Course Development Program or the Emergency Remote Teaching training institute, AND who are assigned to teach courses for Fall 2020, will be eligible for training stipends upon completion of their training pathway. Stipends are $500 for full time faculty and $350 for part-time/adjunct faculty. Note: participation in the STP is open to all TCNJ faculty and librarians, irregardless of eligibility for stipends.

How do I begin?

Sign up for the Summer Training Program and you’ll receive an invitation to begin on June 15. All participants will start with an orientation session (live or self-paced, based on your choice of learning pathway). The orientation will provide an overview of the Summer Training Program and help you determine how to plan your learning pathway.

Can I start and stop the Summer Training Program at any time?

Yes. The Summer Training Program will be available to faculty from June 15-August 25.

I’d like to contribute to the resources available to faculty. How can I volunteer?

The Office of Instructional Design welcomes faculty-led workshops. You can offer your workshop anytime over the summer—you pick your date and time. We will arrange a Zoom event for your presentation. With your permission, we will record the session and make it available to other faculty in the Summer Training Program. Email Judi Cook (cookju@tcnj.edu) for more information.

Who can participate?

All TCNJ faculty and librarians (FT or PT) can participate.
